Osteopathy
Our osteopaths at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, Jenefer Davys (principal), Alexander Marek and Julie Brown, have many years’ experience in treating people of all ages, backgrounds and lifestyles and helping them back to a pain-free, healthier body.
Osteopaths work from the principle that the body has the natural ability to maintain and heal itself and, by helping this process, an osteopath can promote restoration of normal function. Our approach is to aim to find the underlying cause of your symptoms or pain and to enhance your wellbeing by improving the way that your joints, muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and internal structures work with each other.
Osteopaths have a wide range of approaches and techniques that we draw on to tailor your treatment so that it best addresses whatever pain or issue you present with. These include targeted deep tissue stretching and trigger point release, and gentle articulation or manipulation of your joints to improve function, relieve pain and aid recovery.
Safety and Regulation
Osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). It is against the law for anyone to call themselves an osteopath unless they are qualified and registered with the GOsC. The minimum qualification for an osteopath is completion of a four or five year degree, including at least 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice. We then are required to continue to update and expand our knowledge by completing a minimum of 30 hours per year of continuing professional development. GOsC can remove an osteopath from the register if they fail to maintain a strict code of professional practice. You can check whether an osteopath is registered by visiting the GOsC website.
Osteopathy is very safe. Occasionally clients experience a reaction to treatment which may mean some discomfort but this usually resolves within 24-48 hours. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) advises that GPs can safely refer patients to an osteopath for treatment.
Conditions treated by osteopaths
Although osteopaths are well known for treating back pain, the practice of osteopathy can help relieve the symptoms of a wide range of conditions. Osteopaths also treat joint pain, neuromuscular conditions, digestive conditions, headaches and may help with some sleep problems and breathing/respiratory difficulties.
